Calpulli Tecalco is a transdisciplinary organization that works on the research and preservation
of
the biocultural heritage of indigenous cultures. We bring together and combine traditional oral,
scientific, social, technological, and artistic knowledge with people, communities, and
institutions
interested in community work, indigenous cultures, and the environment.
Hábitat
The work of Calpulli Tecalco AC, has focused on documenting various plant and animal species,
many
of which are endangered, as well as observing and reporting on the deterioration of physical
elements, such as soils, slopes and ravines in the area.
Cultural Heritage
Milpa Alta's cultural heritage is vast, complex, and necessarily refers us to the cultural
landscape
of the area. Milpa Alta is a mountain culture, located 2400 meters above sea level, at the foot
of
the Chichinauhtzin mountain range and the southeastern part of the Anahuac Basin.
Nahuatl Culture Promotion
At Calpulli Tecalco we seek to promote Nahuatl culture both within and outside the country; it
is
currently the Mexican indigenous language with the largest number of speakers (around one and a
half
million). In addition, it is and has been a valuable language due to its historical importance,
aside it being from a civilization developed far from the Old World, it is an agglutinating
non-Indo-European language, implicating it’s literary, linguistic, and even of nationalist
importance.
Cultural Initiatives
Various activities have been carried out, ranging from education, workshops, and field
practices, in
the areas of: Science exposure, History, Archaeology, Art History, Natural History, Fine Arts,
Nahuatl Language Teaching, and Robotics.
Artistic Residencies
This project helps us build a space that allows us to promote artistic production and the
indigenous
cultures of Mexico; both within and outside the country, through exhibition projects, critical
research, and reflective discussion, which will contribute to strengthen the different art
practices
in the diverse traditional formats.
Trajectory
With a 17-year history, Calpulli Tecalco is a community-oriented space that carries out various
cultural activities focused on the preservation of indigenous cultures and the environment; for
example, programs to rescue the Nahuatl language, field research work, publications of regional
knowledge, among others.
